  24. Thor is not the be-all end-all of news- and mail-readers. There are 
  25. people out there (such as myself) who have setups for which Thor is 
  26. completely inapropriate.

  28. I, for example, use Suck (on a Linux box) to pull down a newsfeed on the 
  29. hour, and add it to the local news spool. Inn runs on this machine and 
  30. serves the other macines (a PC, another Linux box and the Amiga) on the 
  31. network their news.

  33. So if I want to read news on the Amiga, I want to do it online (why 
  34. should I download news that's stored a few milleseconds away only to have 
  35. it take up space on two hard drives?), I want my .newsrc to be a) 
  36. NFS-mounted and b) a format which all the machines understand. This way, 
  37. I can read news on whichever machine I happen to be sitting at at the 
  38. time and keep a consistant database of what I've read and what I haven't.

  40. NFS-mounting the mail spool works for mail in a similar fasion.

  45. b) be able to read news "online"

  52. Far as I know, Thor supports none of these. (Feel free to correct me if 
  53. I'm wrong).

  55. Don't get me wrong- Thor is great and it has its use, but there are 
  56. situations out there for which it is completely useless. I look at thor 
  57. much the same way I look at Netscrape... it's pretty, yeah, but as a 
  58. result of the everyting-but-the-kitchen-sink functionality the program is 
  59. huge and slow. I'd much rather have one program to get the mail, one to 
  60. read the mail, one to get the news, another to read it... etc.
